Audiobook review: Exit Strategy by Martha Wells

audiobook cover of Exit Strategy by Martha WellsExit Strategy picks up immediately after the conclusion of book 3 with Murderbot on Ship and heading back to the closest station. Its mission is to find Dr. Mensah to give her the evidence against GrayCris that it’s discovered. It soon finds out that Mensah has been taken by GrayCris, and Pin-Lee, Ratthi, and Gurathin are on the Corporate station trying to get her back.

Exit Strategy is my favorite story so far in the Murderbot Diaries. The mix of personal / emotional development, intense action, and direction of the GrayCris storyline creates an engrossing read. I loved seeing the old crew and their reactions to Murderbot, as well as its reactions to them.

While there are a number of great high-action sequences, the climatic battle scenes are my favorite and perfectly written. I love seeing Murderbot realize not only does it desire to win, but that it cares about the humans, that these people are its friends. I love seeing everyone work together on the ship to save themselves. It’s so intense.

Narration: The story is shared via the first person POV of Murderbot. Free does a wonderful job portraying the non-human Murderbot by utilizing a somewhat bland, masculine voice for the narrator and character; however, Free’s performance of Murderbot has been adjusted over the series as it becomes more human-like. Free successfully alters dialogue based on gender, age, and accent, creating unique characters, which have also been refined as the series moves forward.

Overall, Exit Strategy is very entertaining, as is the entire series. Due to the ongoing GrayCris storyline and Murderbot’s emotional development, The Murderbot Diaries must be read in order. I can’t wait to dive into the next story to find out what’s next for Murderbot.

About the Book:

Murderbot wasn’t programmed to care. So its decision to help the only human who ever showed it respect must be a system glitch, right?

Having traveled the width of the galaxy to unearth details of its own murderous transgressions, as well as those of the GrayCris Corporation, Murderbot is heading home to help Dr. Mensah – its former owner (protector? friend?) – submit evidence that could prevent GrayCris from destroying more colonists in its never-ending quest for profit.

But who’s going to believe a SecUnit gone rogue? And what will become of it when it’s caught?
