One day, she will remember the acute feeling of time standing still as they drove into the sun, further and further away from all she has ever known. She glances again at his profile. As they head into the mountains, on Route 1148.
Why, Vic? Why me?
After visiting a remote beauty spot in Thailand, newly married British couple, Vic and Louise Landry, fail to return to their hotel. With no bodies found, however, and after several weeks of intense press coverage, the frenzy of speculation quickly fades: the couple had surely been robbed and left for dead somewhere in the vast steamy, mountainous jungle.
Meanwhile, back in England, having just returned from holiday, freelance writer Ingrid Houseman, has been commissioned to look into the story. But the more she does, the more she’s convinced it was no chance attack. And as soon as she begins to question those who knew the couple, it’s clear they don’t think so, either. Not only that, but Vic’s friend is being followed, and now Ingrid is, too. But despite the danger, powerful intuition spurs her on to investigate further, a decision which will ultimately decide not only her own fate, but also Louise’s.
I wasn’t at all sure what I was getting into as I began The Gilded Cage. We first meet Louise when she is first dating Vic Landry, but England quickly pulled me in as we traveled to Thailand. Twists and turns kept me listening into the wee hours, and I quickly devoured it.
Louise isn’t at all sure how she got lucky enough to wed Vic Landry. He’s handsome and wealthy. What does he really see in her? The two newlyweds take the trip of a lifetime to Thailand, but as their trip takes them further and further into the remote jungle, Louise has doubts. All of Vic’s stories aren’t adding up and who exactly is Katty?
Meanwhile, after weeks of speculation, the world assumes the young couple are dead. Freelance writer Ingrid Houseman has been commissioned to look into the story. Ingrid recognizes Louise as someone who grew up in Yorkshire with her. Curious, she digs, but no one wants to talk, especially about Vic and his family.
The tale that unfolds was filled with twists and kept me hooked. Everything is not as it seems, and some twists I saw coming while others surprised me.
Julia Eve gives voice to Louise and Ingrid. She helped set the tone and enhanced my overall enjoyment of the tale. I recommend listening.
