Made You Look: Chairmaker Dewey Thompson

I’m a sucker for any video that gives me a glimpse into a different way of life, a different place, and a different approach to the craft we all love. This video was released in 1975 and features 79-year-old Dewey Thompson of Sugarloaf Hollow, Ky., making a lovely rocking chair with a woven bark back and seat. Thompson starts the process with an axe and a tree, and he seemingly can do more work in a short time than people like you and me could possibly dream of.

I hope to be around at 79, but I dare not dream of keeping up with someone like Dewey Thompson at 79!
