The New Sonorans were promised peace, but when travel and communication paths between their planet and Earth open again, Earth unleashes a different plan: mass eviction enforced by Apex Industries (aka AI) and their gamified military strategy called “Operation Bounce House.” Instead of creating and deploying soldier bots, AI recruits gamers who design their own war machines and pilot them from home. Oliver and friends don’t have the privilege of shiny state-of-the-art tech, but they have time-tested skills, good old-fashioned grit, and a robot hive queen/nanny/beloved scold named Roger.

It’s possible to be an avid science fiction/fantasy reader and still not know about Operation Bounce House author Matt Dinniman, but in certain (large) circles he is a very big deal. He’s best known for Dungeon Crawler Carl, his tongue-twister-named LitRPG series that follows a US Coast Guard vet and his ex-girlfriend’s cat Princess Donut as they try to survive a post-apocalyptic Earth. Originally self-published online, the seven book series was picked up by Ace Books in 2024 and published in print, digital, and audio formats. LitRPG…?
Operation Bounce House is *not* LitRPG—which is part of the reason it’s such a big deal for fans—but LitRPG is the genre that brought Dinniman his following to begin with. Imagine key aspects of computer RPG, most significantly character stats, woven into standard science fiction and fantasy books. They’re game adjacent books, but not games themselves—a genre that would include more interactive stories like Choose Your Own Adventures as well as tie-ins to specific games like Dungeons & Dragons.
