Alina Ravenscroft has a graduate from Coven Crest Academy, master her magic, and join the king’s powerful coven of witches. The only problem? The king is her grandfather, and he insists she can’t attend without a knight by her side. A bodyguard. A babysitter.
Raelan Ashvale is one of the king’s elite knights—and a secret dragon shifter. Raelan is assigned as Princess Alina’s personal guard. But there’s a Alina is Raelan’s fated mate, and for the past three years, he’s been doing everything he can to ignore the overwhelming pull between them, the searing need to claim her and make her his own. He can’t afford to give in to his desire for her—especially when revealing the secret of his dragon could risk everything for Raelan and his family.
As Alina and Raelan are forced to spend more time together, the growing tension between them becomes impossible to ignore. Raelan has a duty to the king, to his family, and to his secret. But when danger draws closer and threats to Alina’s safety become all too real, Raelan will have to confront the dangerous truths about his dragon—and the powerful connection he shares with the princess.
I love stories set against magic academia and grabbed A Witch and Her Dragon. Alina Ravenscroft, granddaughter to the King, wants to join the powerful witches’ coven for her kingdom, but first she will need to hone her skills at the Coven Crest Academy for witches. Her grandfather grants her permission to attend, but she needs to take a bodyguard. Raelan Ashvale is one of the king’s elite knights and a secret dragon shifter. He’s selected as her bodyguard. Neither are happy. Alina finds him standoffish, but that’s because Raelan avoids her. He has known for three years that Alina is his fated mate.
This forced proximity, he fell first romance, had all the elements for an addictive tale. I loved the setting, the touch her and die passion of Raelan and Alina’s openness. The story offers found family, unique familiars, and an intriguing world. Despite loving the concept, I wanted more. Everything is just skimmed over from our dragon shifter’s origin story to the familiars.
Despite issues, I enjoyed the storyline and romance that developed. The back-and-forth banter and our dragon’s fight to remain in control kept me engaged. We get some suspense and a little tension from the forbidden aspects. Ruthie Bowles & John William Maddux narration enhanced the overall story and their character voices added depth. This story delivers an HEA, and it looks like the next audiobook features another student from the academy. So this will work as a standalone.
