The Wildest Things You Can Borrow From the Library

Libraries are a great resource for getting access to books, but they aren’t the only thing you can borrow from the library. In fact, there is a wide range of supplies and activities that libraries provide for their community.
Many libraries offer community spaces for book clubs, arts and crafts, or other projects, and even offer board games, video games, tools, toys, and more to checkout. But some libraries truly go above and beyond with their offerings…
Here are some of the wildest things you can borrow if you sign up for a library card — in the best way possible, of course!
Seeds
Many libraries host a seed library, where you can either donate or checkout seeds. Grab a gardening book while you’re there to learn the best way to plant them! For more information and a map of seed libraries checkout the Seed Library Network.
Telescopes
The Library Telescope Program™ was launched in 2008 by the New Hampshire Astronomical Society, providing telescopes to 1,000 libraries in 9 different countries.
Outdoor gear
Camping kits, snowshoes, e-bikes, kayaks, nature backpacks, fishing sets and more! Libraries aren’t just for sitting inside and reading a book (though that’s obviously a great option); they can also help you explore the great outdoors.
Sewing machines and knitting supplies
Crochet hooks, knitting needles, yarn, thread, and even full on sewing machines can be checked out from many libraries. The San Diego Public Library has a Cosplay Repair Station with all the tools and supplies necessary for quick costume maintenance leading up to ComicCon.
Art and art supplies
Painting and drawing materials are available at many locations, but so is art by local artists! Search for art lending libraries near you to borrow some unique home decor to temporarily decorate your house.
Streaming services
If you’re looking to narrow down your streaming subscriptions, many provide access to movies, documentaries, and hit TV series.
Tickets and museum passes
Museums, parks, theaters, and aquariums can be an amazing way to spend your day — and they can also be expensive. Check with your local library to see what they offer in the way of experience passes.
Makerspaces
Libraries want to inspire creativity. Some have makerspaces with 3D printers, photo studios complete with backdrops, recording studios, and tool rentals.
Tablets and wi-fi hotspots
Most libraries provide free internet, an essential resource for many who don’t have access at home. But some also offer take-home hotspots as well as hand-held tablets, in some cases providing one-on-one support to set up the devices.
Safety and medical equipment
Medical kits including tools and information to address a wide range of health issues are available at many libraries. Some have test kits for COVID-19 or radon — a harmful, odorless gas that can lead to respiratory issues and lung cancer. There are even Narcan vending machines at some locations.
Baking supplies and spices
Some locations have cake pans and other cooking supplies available for checkout. There are also spice libraries with samples of different spices to help you expand your palette. The Spice Library at the Springvale Public Library has over 40 samples!
