Fragrance Wardrobe
Your perfume isn’t just how you smell—it’s how you feel when you get dressed in the morning, for a night out, for a boardroom meeting. It’s just as much of an accessory to how you present yourself to the world as your clothing (and let’s not forget its close ties to memory and emotion). With that in mind, we’ve launched Fragrance Wardrobe, a scent series that highlights the rotating perfume “wardrobes” of our favorite tastemakers through key points in their life. Get to know them better via the scents they choose to wear.
Zoë Kravitz is effortlessly cool. Whether on the red carpet or the big screen, her free-spirited energy, vintage-chic style, and timeless glamour draw you in immediately. And we’re certainly not the only ones who feel this way about the multihyphenate. YSL Beauty tapped Kravitz as an ambassador seven years ago and continues to deepen its relationship with the actress-producer with each passing year. “It’s an honor to work with YSL Beauty,” Kravitz says. “It is a brand I’ve loved for a long time and has an incredible legacy. They’ve always encouraged women to be independent, bold, and strong.”
The 36-year-old has fronted countless campaigns for the brand’s cosmetics over the years and now is the proud face of the iconic Black Opium Eau de Parfum. This month, Kravitz and YSL Beauty are celebrating the newest iteration of the fragrance, Black Opium Glitter, featuring a sweet, marshmallow musk accord. Ahead, Kravitz fills us in on her connection to Black Opium, how her fragrance wardrobe has evolved, and the best beauty advice she’s received.
What’s your earliest fragrance memory?
“My father’s mother, Roxie, was such a feminine woman. As a kid, I remember seeing all the beautiful fragrances she had on her vanity. The bottles were so special and like little treasures to me. I would watch her get ready for the day and choose her perfume and red lipstick.”
How would you describe your Fragrance Wardrobe throughout the years?
“When you’re younger, you gravitate towards the brightest, flashiest, and sweetest smells. Then, I was really into oils for a while— like jasmine, rose, and vanilla—which is interesting because many of those notes are in Black Opium. I’ve always been into combining sweet and earthy scents.”
How does wearing Black Opium Glitter make you feel?
“It’s really playful, sexy, and flirtatious. I love that it has sultry and sweet notes.”
What memory does Black Opium Glitter bring you back to?
“Because I work with the brand, I think about all the incredible campaigns I get to do with them. I also think about the people I get to work with and the vibe we set when we do these campaigns. We try to tell dark, sexy, and adventurous stories [through the images].”
What are your other beauty staples at the moment?
“The Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Awakening Concealer Click Pen is a lifesaver. It’s easy to reapply and blends really well. The All Hours Luminous Natural Matte Foundation is great and lasts forever. The brand also has great lipsticks, like the Rouge Pur Couture Satin Lipstick line.”
What’s the best piece of beauty advice you’ve received?
“My grandmother and mother showed me that ‘less is more’ with makeup. The power of restraint is what makes things great. If you’re doing a red lip, let that be the star of the show. If you’re doing a smoky eye, let that be the star of the show. It’s about highlighting who you are versus covering up.”
How are you practicing self-care as we near the end of the year?
“I love spending time with my friends and family. It really does feed my soul and remind me of what’s important. I’ve been finding a lot of comfort and happiness in that lately. But I also enjoy alone time. I’ve been listening to music, writing, and reflecting. We live in an intense world with constant stimulation, so finding time to be quiet is wonderful.”
What are you looking forward to in 2025?
“I don’t have a lot of plans yet, which I find exciting. A lot of the time, I know what my life is going to look like for the next few months. There are a few projects I know I’ll be doing, but there’s a bit of an open road for me to figure out. I’m looking forward to writing again and working on my next film.”
