There are two things Ana Sartori knows for certain. She can’t shapeshift into a wolf like her father or his pack. And, despite her being a latent, little more than human, he loves her despite her faults. She’s never going to be an alpha like him, but she can still hold her own in a fight. Not that her life is violent. He makes sure of that. Aside from occasionally wrestling pets into a headlock when it’s time to trim their nails at Gwinnett Street Groomers, Ana leads a simple life.
At least that was the case until someone broke into her pet resort and spa, leaving a mystery dog behind in one of the bougie boarding suites. Not to mention there’s a vampire hiding in the potting shed. A very tall, very handsome vampire. He even smells nice, minus the blood drenching his clothes.
Ana could handle those things, probably, but now there’s a new alpha determined to claim the town—and Ana—as his territory. Either she stands and fights for her home, or she runs to her father with her (metaphorical) tail tucked between her legs. Life is a lot of things, but for Ana, simple isn’t one of them anymore.
This is the first audiobook in the Groom & Doom novella series featuring shifters and other paranormal creatures. We meet Ana, owner of the Gwinnett Street Groomers. Ana is the daughter of the pack leader, but has never shifted. She lives outside the pack limits in a home she inherited from her Aunt. She owns and runs a pet boarding and grooming business. Her father is very protective of her, but when she discovers a wounded vampire in her potting shed, she keeps it a secret. The tale that unfolded pulled me in and has me curious for the next one.
I liked Ana from the outset and immediately felt how stifled she was by her father’s protective behavior. She loves her business and home, but doesn’t have much of a social life. Her day started off normally, but when she opened the shop, she found a mysterious dog with pink painted nails occupying the kennel. This immediately sets off her protective father, so when she finds a bleeding vampire hiding in her shed, she says nothing.
The story really picks up in the second half as we discover long-held secrets, who the vampire is and the cute, mysterious dog. For the first time, Ana thinks she may have found a friend, but suddenly she isn’t sure if anything but she knows she is very curious about the handsome stranger.
If you are looking for a paranormal fantasy with shifters, this is the perfect novella-length audiobook to listen to. Leanne Woodward narrates and did a lovely job of capturing both the voices and tone of the story. The next audiobook, The Goblin in the Sink Drain, releases in April 2026.
