The Tapestry of Fate by Shannon Chakraborty – That’s What I’m Talking About…

Audiobook review: The Tapestry of Fate by Shannon Chakraborty
The Tapestry of Fate picks up a few months after the conclusion of the previous adventure. Amina and her crew are bound to their agreement with the peri to locate and retrieve four additional transgressions (magic-imbued objects). The book opens with a recounting from Jamal and Amina on how they were able to successfully locate the second transgression. Amina hopes to have some time at home with her family before heading out again; however, Khayzur shows up at Amina’s home not long after they return.
The Tapestry of Fate is another exciting, well-crafted adventure in the Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi series. I have come to care about Amina and her found family, her dreams, and her daughter, Marjana. The story is difficult in many ways: Amina must make decisions for what is best, but sometimes that conflicts with her moral code. The terrors that Amina unearths are unspeakable. Her inter turmoil she experiences because of her actions is heartbreaking. But Amina always weathers on.
I love that Amina is middle-aged, and despite supernatural enhancements, she still suffers a bum knee, aches, and pains. She is not perfect but will make the tough calls. She loves her family with her whole heart, but sticks with her commitments once made, even when they take her from Marjana for months. She is an honorable pirate. My heart ached for her. Marjana is coming of age and confides in Amina that she is different from others, and Amina isn’t quite ready to tell Marjana about her chaos spirit father.
The journey shipwrecks Amina and her crew on an island lost in a pocket dimension; a jail created to trap a powerful sorceress. Once there, Amina is isolated from her friends and crew, and I didn’t love that she is alone for much of the tale. But in the end, she is with her team fighting to escape.
While The Tapestry of Fate is another standalone tale, there is a huge twist at the end, and I worry about the fallout for Amina. The author has stated that she is currently working on the third and final book of the trilogy, which will address the two primary conflicts Amina has been dealing with since the first book. I cannot wait to see how it will all wrap up.
I appreciate the mix of cultures and beliefs that the author integrates into the story. Although the crew is not traveling from port to port as much in The Tapestry of Fate, Chakraborty continues to weave important aspects of the region’s identity into the tale.
Narration: The book is shared via two first person POV narrators and one second person POV, with the primary storyteller Amina al-Sirafi (Lameece Issaq). Additional storytelling is shared by Jamal (Amin El Gamal), a scribe who provides backstories and additional details to enhance Amina’s tale. Both are sharing a story and will at times talk directly to the listener.
Issaq performs Amina will little accent and a LOT of emotion. She is a fun storyteller and enhances the overall enjoyment of the book. Issaq alters her voice effectively for gender and age, making each character fairly unique and identifiable. She’s very animated. El Gamal only speaks as Jamal and therefore does not alter his performance much. He also speaks with little noticeable accent.
A new addition this go around is Sneha Mathan, who shares the tale of the lost transgression and powerful sorceress over the course of several interludes mixed into Amina’s tale. While the speaker is not explicitly identified, by the end of the book the reader understands who is sharing the information in the second person POV. Mathan uses a mature female voice for this role.
In the end, this is an amazing series and wonderful tale. If you enjoy adventure, I highly recommend picking up The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi.

About the Book:
Amina al-Sirafi thinks she’s struck gold. Tasked with hunting down arcane artifacts for the council of immortal peris, she can savor the occasional rollicking adventure on the high seas with her cherished criminal companions while still returning home to raise her beloved daughter, Marjana. But when Raksh, the spirit of discord with whom she is reluctantly wed, provokes the council’s wrath, Amina is charged with a seemingly impossible quest: steal a spindle capable of rewriting fate from a mysterious sorceress on an island no one can escape.
Forced to leave Marjana—who is increasingly frustrated at being peddled what are clearly lies about her mother’s life and her own past—Amina finds her mission almost immediately thrown into peril. But deadly storms, an erratic poison mistress, and old enemies are the least of her worries. For the peris’ story is unraveling, hinting at a far deadlier game whose rules Amina must swiftly puzzle out. A game that sets her against an adversary more cunning and powerful than she has ever faced.
A game that not everyone on her crew wants her to win.
