Worst Wingman Ever by Abby Jimenez – That’s What I’m Talking About…

Audiobook review: Worst Wingman Ever by Abby Jimenez
Worst Wingman Ever is a darling short in a series of stories involving “improbable meet-cutes.” At just over 1 hour and 15 minutes in length, the small tale fills a big space.
Holly is a hospice nurse and her current patient is her own grandmother. It’s weighing on her but she’s honored to do the work. John is a maintenance man who is helping his brother fix up his new place. Both are new to the area, and each must heal from a broken heart and lack of self confidence.
Through a series of notes left on Holly’s car windshield, Holly and John get to know each other, both assuming the person leaving the notes is elderly. I absolutely love how they communicate back-and-forth; the kindness and generosity of their hearts on full display. When the truth is discovered, I had all the feels for the pair and just know they will be happy.
Narration: The story is shared via the alternating first person POVs of Holly and John. I’ve enjoyed both Arndt and Webber in previous books, and they continue to deliver in this novella. Arndt’s voice is young without sounding childish and she is able to express Holly’s weariness and exhaustion, as well as her love for her grandmother. Webber has a deep voice, and also conveys John’s reluctance and tiredness. Both narrators alter each character’s dialogue with minimal differences between the characters.
Worst Wingman Ever is a lovely meet-cute and the start of a sweet romance. It’s short but fulfilling.
Content Warning: death of an elderly grandparent.

About the Book:
They’re falling in love, yet they’ve never met. Maybe fate can intervene in a heartwarming “what-if” short story about new beginnings by the New York Times bestselling author of Yours Truly.
Holly is dealing with the impending death of her grandmother and still reeling from a bad breakup. One bright spot: a Valentine’s Day card on Holly’s windshield—even if it wasn’t meant for her. An amusing mistake soon turns into a lovely exchange of anonymous notes, little acts of kindness, and a growing affection between two strangers. What happens when one of them has to say goodbye?
