A Beautiful Story About Growth (Literally & Figuratively)

4 out of 5 stars

I knew from the moment I saw the names Destiny and Faith that I was in for some serious sapphic cheese, and honestly? Even through the slight-cringe moments, I smiled throughout every bit of this.

What caught my eye originally was the story (and cover). These two women are navigating a beautiful, high-stakes world of landscaping. While that’s happening, they’re trying to figure out if their past can be buried under new growth (c’mon, I had to).

It’s a sweet, grounded story about finding your way back to each other that’s rooted (listen, the puns write themselves) communication!

April Doty absolutely nailed the narration for this one. She managed to give Destiny that slightly more gruff, business-minded edge while making Faith sound light and hopeful. Switching between them felt seamless. Very few narrators can capture such distinct personalities so effortlessly while keeping them from becoming forced or stereotypical.

Potentially a slight spoiler (it’s a second-chance romance, some of this is expected)… I really enjoyed watching the girls swap roles as they gained confidence throughout the story. While Faith’s early and unhealed moments felt a bit heavy at times, I think it made the eventual payoff worth it. It’s awesome hearing talented women navigate their professional goals while dealing with their personal baggage.

If you are looking for a solid second-chance romance with a stellar narration, light steam, and lots of swoon-worthy love, don’t discount Until They Weren’t.
