Chapter 14 – A Dark Knight

There was only blackness in the SUV. The angle of vision obscure the cab, so Ric couldn’t make out who was driving or if there was a passenger.

John turned around. ‘Who’s driving like an idiot?’ he demanded. ‘Someone could get killed.’

Ric was beginning to think that was the intention, but he said nothing. He kept his pace slow and steady, refusing to be pushed to go faster. ‘Make sure your seat belts are tight,’ Ric warned his father and Elaina.

The truck backed off to about thirty metres and waited for a few seconds. Then it sprinted rapidly forward.

Ric maintained his speed. He remembered a slightly wider portion of the road somewhere up ahead.

Elaina held the front bar on the dashboard.

John called out to Ric, ‘Stop the car. I’ll sort this guy out.’

‘Not a good idea. Unsure how many there are. Not sure what they want.’

The SUV dropped back and then began its run up to the FJ-Orion. Ric tapped the pedal, flashing his lights. The SUV barely missed making contact.

The straight track was ending with a sharp bend in the road. Ric remembered the turn, followed by a straight away and a turnout midway down.

‘You two do what I say. Don’t ask why.’ Ric was forceful, leaving no options. ‘Get your hands on your seatbelts. Get ready to get out. There’s a spot coming up. I’ll do a quick stop on the side of the road. Move into the bush. Get out of sight.’

‘Ric, no! NO!’ Elaina shouted.

‘Elaina, do what I said,’ Ric demanded.

He entered the hairpin turn, tapped the brakes lightly, then accelerated around the corner. The wheels skidded to a stop at the broad turnout. He killed the lights. ‘Get to the uphill side. Lie flat. Hurry!’

John and Elaina unclicked their belts and left the Land Cruiser, slamming the doors. Elaina grabbed John’s hand and pushed him towards the side of the road. They climbed into the bush and lay down.

As they disappeared, Ric tromped on the accelerator. He headed down the mountain, turning his lights back on. The SUV came around the corner fast, barrelling down on his bumper.

On the side of the road, John and Elaina popped their heads up as the dark SUV raced past them, trailing a cloud of dust.

‘Where’s Ric going? What’s he doing?’ John was rattled and flustered.

‘He’s …’ Elaina couldn’t explain to John, but she knew it was what Ric instinctively did. This time, it was going to get him killed!

Two car lengths back, the chaser suddenly turned night into day with two million candle-power of off-road lights flooding the hillside. The intensity was blinding.

Ric tapped his brakes quickly, a red warning from the rear of the Land Cruiser. It was an unexpected move. The driver of the SUV stomped on its brakes, causing a fishtail slide. It slowed the vehicle down, which almost hit FJ-Orion broadside.

Ric downshifted and hit the pedal, still hugging the high side of the road heading into a hairpin turn. A shallow ravine was on the left of the roadway. Ric shot into a turn out, leaving the tail of FJ-Orion sticking out onto the road.

‘Two can play this game,’ he muttered.

He grabbed the handle of the spot beam in the overhead and swivelled it around towards the hairpin corner.

The SUV came powering down, handling the corner but not slowing down. Ric flicked the spot lamp on, laser-focusing the beam onto the windshield of the oncoming vehicle.

The driver was blinded by the light, but could see the tail of Ric’s truck hanging out. His lizard brain reacted. He swerved to avoid hitting the parked truck and mis-judged the narrowness of the road. The SUV rocketed off the edge into space, four-wheels airborne.

John and Elaina had walked across to the edge overlooking the valley below. They couldn’t see any lights or any cars. But suddenly in the night air there was a loud, crunching sound. Then a bang! Metal hitting something hard.

Elaina screamed, ‘Ric! Ric!’

She and John started running down the road, then stopped. A set of lights was racing back towards them. Elaina grabbed John’s hand and they hunkered down in the bush.

The FJ-Orion stopped close to where John and Elaina were crouching. ‘Get in. Let’s get out of here,’ Ric said.

They sped down the road and Ric pointed to the small turnout. The black SUV had gone up and over the road edge, slamming into a large rock in the lower part of the ravine. Even in the moonlight, they could see the truck was totalled. Two figures were outside the SUV on the far side of the rock. They were shouting at each other. One arm took a swing and connected with a head. The scuffle turned into a brawl.
