Audiobook review: Miss Match by Lindzee Armstrong

audiobook cover of Miss Match by Lindsey ArmstrongOne of my favorite tropes is friends-to-lovers, so I picked up Miss Match out of my TBR pile for this month’s TBR Challenge theme of Tropetastic. Unfortunately, this book misses the mark.

This review contains spoilers… BIG SPOILER WARNING…

It’s the first Thanksgiving without Luke’s dad who passed away about a month previous. It hits him hard and in an effort to forget, he goes to the club to drink. All he wants is to be with his best friend and life-long love, Brooke, but she’s always kept it in the friend zone (they even have rules).

Brooke loves her job as a match-maker and believes wholeheartedly in the system, after all that is how she and her fiancé met. So when it looks like the company is going to close, she asks her “most eligible” billionaire best friend to sign up, bringing in a slew of new clients.

Okay, so here’s the deal. Brooke is engaged to another man for over ninety percent of the story. And she earnestly believes she’s happily engaged and can’t wait to start her new life with her fiancé. But her roommate, other friends, and Luke all believe differently.

Brooke’s dad is a serial cheater. So she’s got abandonment issues, which is why she convinces herself that things won’t work with Luke – he’s a player. And unfortunately, in the end, the author uses cheating as a third act breakup between Brooke and her fiancé. *hard eye roll*

In my opinion, Miss Match would’ve worked so much better had Brooke not been engaged. The entire story she’s with another guy while her best friend, Luke, tells her he’s in love with her. She constantly pushes him away and pretends it’s not happening, walking the line between both men. Brooke is immature. She knows she will have to give up one man and she can’t.

Narration: The story is shared via the alternating third person POVs of Luke and Brooke. Williams has a strong voice which is employs for the narrator for both POVs. Williams alters all character dialogue based on gender, age, and personality, successfully deepening her voice for Luke. Some character performances are more successful than others. Williams also adds accents that sound a bit exaggerated.

In the end, Miss Match has the bones of what could have been a good friends-to-lovers romance, but misses the mark by giving the female protagonist a fiancé for nearly the entire book.

About the Book:

She’s a matchmaker with abandonment issues. He’s her billionaire best friend willing to do anything to win her heart.

Brooke’s abandonment issues have wrecked her love life, despite being Los Angeles’s top-rated matchmaker. Her one constant over the past eight years has been Luke, her ever patient billionaire best friend. But she keeps even him at arm’s length, terrified to explore the chemistry between them.

Luke is the city’s richest and most eligible bachelor, but he has eyes only for Brooke. He’s loved her since high school, but she’s rebuffed all his attempts to deepen their relationship. Despite that, she’s been there for him through every trial—including his father’s recent death, and his now tenuous position as CEO.

When Toujour announces it’s closing, Brooke hatches a plan to save the company by hiring Luke as a client. But Luke knows this is his last chance to win her heart. And he’s willing to break all the rules to do it.
